Culture and adventure through the Rivers of Peru
Kayak.
The beauty and allure of kayaking the rivers of Peru is to be found in the deep canyons carved by their rushing waters over thousand of years. The canyons are steep, dramatic, and full of impressive, challenging rapids, rugged side hikes, and sandy beaches for camping. Whether kayaking the Apurimac, a popular river close to Cusco, or choosing the incredible Colca-Cotahuasi combo, you will be paddling with Peru’s foremost kayaking experts who know the rivers intimately.
Rafting.
The rivers of Peru are born from the melting snow of the high glaciated peaks of the Andes, forming great and beautiful plunging valleys, gullies and canyons. Combined with the broader features of our impressive and constantly changing geography, the rivers in Peru are ideally suited for whitewater rafting and kayaking. They also represent an ideal –as well as often the only- way to reach inaccessible sites and areas of natural beauty as well as cultural and historical interest.
Whitewater rafting and kayaking in Peru began in the 1980's as the result of a Polish expedition which carried out the first ever run of the Colca River Canyon in Arequipa , one of the deepest canyons in the world. Upon the termination of the expedition, the members left behind their kayaks and inflatable rafts –along with all of the accessory equipment- donating it to the Vellutino family of Arequipa, who had provided them with lodging and support. Naturally enough, this in turn motivated the Vellutino brothers to become initiated into the sport and they by now credit to their name a virtually innumerable amount of expeditions and first descents along many different rivers in Peru
Piero Vellutino, present-day National Peruvian Kayaking Champion as well the only Certified Technical Rescue Expert in South America belonging to Swift Water Rescue (of World Rescue Group); and founder of Terra Explorer Peru invites and welcomes you to participate and share with him in a unique experience of culture and adventure through the Rivers of Peru.
