Connect with the soul of the great Andes

Why we love this experience?

  • Peru is a country that keeps its ancestral culture alive thanks to our native inhabitants. Take the opportunity to be welcomed into their communities.
  • This adventure immerses you in the heart of their lifestyles and fascinating traditions while exploring natural spaces of immense beauty.
  • An opportunity to connect with the millenary past of the cultures that inhabited our world for many, many years.

Itinerary

  • General

Discover, authentically and through photography, the mysteries of one of the most outstanding weaving communities in the area. For three days, explore the Andes Mountains and pass through communities frozen in time, among turquoise lakes, mountain peaks, and impressive glaciers.

Paddle the waters of Titicaca, the highest navigable lake in the world and the largest in South America. Visit its islands, guardians of millenary customs, with our local host and friend of Terra Explorer, Hector Huatta.

Explore and be part of extensive culture, history, and natural beauty.

  • Day 1: Welcome to the Sacred Valley of the Incas, Cusco.

Your journey begins in Cusco, the ancient capital of the Inca Empire and cultural heritage of humanity.  At the airport, a Terra Explorer guide will welcome and accompany you to your hotel in the Sacred Valley of the Incas.

On the way you will discover the Andes, the longest mountain range on the planet, inhabited by legendary indigenous communities and areas untouched by modernity. In the following days, this place will allow you to connect with different ways of seeing the world.

    Meals included: Snacks.

Accommodation: Hotel or private house in the Sacred Valley.

  • Day 2: Misminay community and mountain biking.

Share your morning with the villagers of Misminay, who will welcome you into their community and engage you in their customs and traditions. Work the land, learn about medicinal herbs or weave with a loom, just as their ancestors did.

A short hike will take you straight to the circular ruins of Moray, an ancient and enigmatic center of agricultural experimentation.

From here, and on mountain bikes, pedal through extensive cultivated fields to the salt mines of Pichingoto, more than three thousand salt terraces that have been in use since Inca times.

Somewhere along the way, we will surprise you with a delicious luxury picnic in the open air.

    Duration: 2 hours biking.

    Meals included: Breakfast and lunch.

Accommodation: Hotel or private house in the Sacred Valley.

  • Day 3: Chinchero's Weaving Tradition in Photos with Miguel Palomino.

Braulia lives near the beautiful lake of Piuray in Chinchero. Like many of the women in this community, she is an extraordinary weaver.

Here the women come together to weave, and it is in these meetings under the electric blue sky of the Andes, that the stories of the town are knitted. Songs, myths, and legends are always being shared during their daily lives.

Accompany Miguel Palomino, a distinguished Cusco photographer, to Braulia’s house and discover this intimate space through photography. Maybe you want to learn about composition, light management, other photographic techniques, the Andean world, or simply talk about life while you enjoy a delicious outdoor picnic on the shores of the lake.

    Meals included: Breakfast and lunch.

Accommodation: Hotel or private house in the Sacred Valley.

  • Day 4: Trek through Lares communities. Cancha Cancha.

The Lares Trail combines spectacular natural landscapes with the approach to communities stopped in time, an adventure that allows you to experience Peru’s culture up close.

We start in the neighborhood of Huaran, located in the Sacred Valley of the Incas, ascending an ancient Inca trail and crossing a lush valley and crop fields until we reach the community of Cancha Cancha.

This is a small and magical community. Their houses are built entirely of stone, with small farmyards full of llamas and alpacas, the predominant camelid species of the Andes.

Meals included: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Accommodation: Luxury camping in Cancha Cancha community.

  • Day 5: Quiswarani Community.

Wake up amidst the purity of the Andes, say goodbye to Cancha Cancha, and ascend the mountainside to the pass of Pachacutec.

The summit awaits you with a striking view of the snow-capped peaks of Pitusiray, Sahuasiray, Colquecruz, Chicón, and Helancoma, a gift for the soul.

Descending between the altiplano lakes of Condereancocha and Hatuncocha, you will arrive at the home of Mauro Quispe, a native inhabitant of the Quiswarani community and friend of Terra Explorer for many years, who will give you a warm welcome.

Meals included: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Accommodation: Luxury camping in Cancha Cancha community.

  • Day 6: Lares and the Sacred Valley.

Today the doors of Mauro’s house will open for you, allowing you to meet his family. In addition to working the land and cattle for their subsistence, they are skilled weavers.

After a pleasant morning, continue to the Lares Valley, the end of our journey along one of the most rewarding routes in our region.

Meals included: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Accommodation: Hotel or private house in the Sacred Valley.

  • Day 7: Inca Trail, the final stretch to Machu Picchu.

Travel the last 13 km.(8 mi.) of the legendary Inca Trail that takes you to Machu Picchu, a masterpiece of Inca architecture and engineering and considered one of the seven wonders of the modern world.

A train will take you directly to Km 104 (Mile 64), the starting point of the trek. Along the way, with a spectacular view of the Urubamba Valley, visit the remains of Chachabamba and the impressive archeological complex of Wiñay Wayna, built by the Inca Pachacutec in the fifteenth century.

Continue hiking through one of the best-preserved sections of the Inca Trail, cross a cloud forest with abundant flora and fauna, including more than 300 types of orchids, until you reach the Sun Gate.

Enter through the gate and be amazed by the majestic Inca citadel, an image that will surely remain in your memory forever.

    Meals included: Breakfast and lunch.

Accommodation: Hotel in Machu Picchu town.

  • Day 8: Visit Machu Picchu and return to Cusco city.

Calmly explore Machu Picchu and discover the history of Peru as you walk through squares, temples, fountains, monuments, and residences of what once was the most important religious, political, and cultural center of the Inca Empire.

Optionally, climb to the summit of Huayna Picchu Mountain or the top of Machu Picchu Mountain, two natural viewpoints with striking views of the entire citadel.

In the afternoon, board the train back to the Sacred Valley or to the city of Cusco.

    Meals included: Breakfast.

Accommodation: Hotel or private house in Cusco city.

  • Day 9: Kayaking in Titicaca, the highest navigable lake in the world. Llachon.

Join us to discover the magic of Titicaca, the highest navigable lake in the world and the largest in South America. This adventure begins on Llachón, a beautiful peninsula on the shores of Lake Titicaca, in Puno, to where it is easy to fly from cities like Lima or Cusco.

Llachón is located in Capachica, a community that stands out for wearing very peculiar and colorful hats. The community’s entrance is through an arch in the shape of a giant hat, a picturesque detail typical of these remote communities.

Valentín’s family, natives of Llachón, will welcome you and open the doors of their home and rural lodge for the night.

Meals included: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

    Accommodation: Homestay at Llachon.

  • Day 10: Taquile Island.

Wake up enjoying the fresh morning air. A boat will take you to a port on Taquile. From here, in expedition kayaks, skirt the western shore of the island to Kullata, a white sandy beach overlooking the snow-capped peaks of Bolivia’s Real Mountain Range that looms on the opposite shore of the lake.

At this beautiful beach, Hector Huatta will welcome you. Walk with Hector a network of pedestrian paths of pre-Inca origin that interconnect this magical island. Visit its archaeological remains, learn about the vegetation, the use of native plants, and the traditional social and political system under which its inhabitants are governed.

UNESCO has recognized the beautiful textile art of the island as Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Be introduced to this world by Hector’s wife and mother, expert weavers. Experience one of the best sunsets in the world and spend the night in this beautiful rural lodge.

Meals included: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

    Accommodation: Homestay at Taquile island.

  • Day 11: Floating Uros Islands.

This morning say goodbye to Hector and his family. Paddle the eastern shore of the island and observe, from its calm waters, the tranquility of the daily life of the island’s inhabitants.

Then, by boat, visit the floating islands of the Uros communities. You have probably never been on a floating island before. These islands are unique because they are handmade with a vegetable fiber called totora. Learn firsthand about the extraordinary heritage and the ancestral techniques used to keep the islands afloat.

Overnight in a hotel on the shores of Lake Titicaca.

    Meals included: Breakfast and lunch.

    • All staff involved in Terra Explorer operations are fully vaccinated and the guides are tested for Covid-19 one day prior to meeting clients.
    • Rigorous and constant disinfection of equipment, food and beverages, surfaces shared by travelers, places of activities, accommodation, and transportation.
    • Providing our clients with disinfection stations and resources for personal hygiene at all times of the trip.
    • Personnel trained to comply with the new measures: Use of protective equipment during work, good hygiene practice, social distancing, proper use of hygiene equipment for surfaces and clothing, self-assessment of health and how to respond to the possible event that oneself or someone close to them shows symptoms related to COVID-19.
    • Constant health monitoring of all personnel involved with Terra Explorer.
    • Guides trained to comply with the new security protocols, deliver the appropriate information to the traveler, monitor our travelers‘ health, and follow the established protocols in case a traveler shows symptoms or gets infected with COVID-19.
    • Established protocols and contingency plans if a traveler or staff shows symptoms or gets infected with COVID-19, including medical assistance if required.
    • Keeping you informed before and during your trip, with updates and official news of each visited destination.

    Your promise to us

Follow the instructions related to health and safety given by the Terra Explorer team and your guide, before and during your trip.

    • Good hygiene practice.
    • Compliance with the guidelines provided by local authorities in Peru, such as social distancing, use of masks where necessary, and hand washing.

    Stay home if:

    • Someone close to you or yourself shows symptoms related to COVID-19.
    • You have been exposed to or have tested positive for COVID-19.
    • You have been diagnosed with a severe medical condition that makes you vulnerable.
