Unexplored Cusco

Why we love this experience?

  • The highlight of this trip to Peru is the exploration of remote and little-known spaces.
  • This is an experience that defines the adventurous soul of Terra Explorer: trails are hiked, forests are crossed on mountain bikes, lakes are paddled, and rivers are navigated on rafts. Each space is explored according to its nature.

Itinerary

  • General

Discover the essence of the magical Andes, avoiding crowds, and thus getting to the heart of these mountains.

As you explore lakes, forests, and rivers, observe the life of local fishermen, farmers working in their fields, the highlands, and the wildlife that inhabits these spaces, while you walk through areas of breathtaking natural beauty.

Explore the Sacred Valley of the Incas on horseback and visit Machu Picchu, the seventh wonder of the modern world.

  • Day 1: Welcome to Cusco, Peru.

Your journey begins in Cusco, the ancient capital of the Inca Empire and cultural heritage of humanity.  At the airport, a Terra Explorer guide will welcome and accompany you to your hotel.

The city of Cusco is located at 3300 meters above sea level, so we recommend you rest a little to acclimatize optimally.

In the afternoon, discover one of the most beautiful cities in Latin America, full of archeological remains and colorful colonial neighborhoods, witnesses of the passage of time and the events that shaped the history of Peru.

    Meals included: Snacks.

Accommodation: Hotel or private house in Cusco.

  • Day 2: Acclimation hike to Inkilltambo.

Hike one of the most important stretches of an ancient Inca trail, and, en route, visit ancient temples and ceremonial centers.

This hike is like traveling back in time, as it is difficult not to imagine the ancient inhabitants making use of this road and its sacred spaces.

Optionally, continue walking and enter a colonial neighborhood until you reach the main square of Cusco, the ancient capital of the Empire, and witness the passage of time and the events that shaped the history of the conquest of Peru.

    Meals included: Breakfast and lunch.

Accommodation: Hotel or private house in Cusco.

  • Day 3: Adventure in Pomacanchi. Hike and mountain bike.

Pomacanchi, inserted in a cluster of several other lakes, is a little-known jewel, located in the mountains of the South Valley of Cusco.

While walking and mountain biking, cross punas and eucalyptus forests while watching endemic birds in the midst of epic mountains.

Enjoy the tranquility of watching the sunset on the shores of the lake with a fire under a starry sky. Spend the night enjoying the peace of being sheltered in the far reaches of the Andes.

Meals included: Breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Accommodation: Luxury camp in Pomacanchi lake.

  • Day 4: Kayak in Pomacanchi lake and rafting the Willcamayu river.

Feeling the warmth of the sun, while crossing the lake from shore to shore in sea expedition kayaks. From its waters, watch local fishermen and learn about endemic fish species such as huitas, ccarachis, ch’iñis, and carps.

Once on the other shore, enjoy your last adventure: rafting the Willcamayu River. Fuel yourself with adrenaline and feel the force of the moving white waters while paddling fun class II and III rapids.

    Meals included: Breakfast and lunch.

Accommodation: Hotel in Cusco or the Sacred Valley.

  • Day 5: Horseback ride, lunch, and Paso horse show at Hacienda Huayoccari.

A very different and pleasant way to explore the Sacred Valley of the Incas is by horseback riding on Peruvian Paso horses, an exceptional native breed.

Accompanied by a member of the Lambarri Orihuela family, immerse yourself in a century of history and a private collection of Peruvian art, visiting the old Huayoccari hacienda. With a spectacular view of the Sacred Valley and surrounded by seventeenth and eighteenth-century furniture, colonial paintings, lots of popular art, and baroque music, enjoy a delicious lunch typical of the region.

In the afternoon, in the hacienda’s gardens, enjoy a classical dance of Marinera with Paso horses, one of the most impressive shows in Peruvian tradition.

    Meals included: Breakfast and lunch.

Accommodation: Hotel or private house in the Sacred Valley.

  • Day 6: Luxury train to Machu Picchu town and explore the Inca citadel.

Board a luxury train for an unforgettable journey through impressive landscapes to Machu Picchu town.

Explore Machu Picchu at length, taking advantage of having arrived at an advantageous hour, since it is less crowded during the afternoon. Discover the Inca’s history as you walk through squares, temples, fountains, monuments, and residences of the most important religious, political, and cultural center of the Empire.

    Meals included: Breakfast.

Accommodation: Hotel in Machu Picchu town.

  • Day 7: Return to Cusco city and transfer to the airport.

Return in a luxury train back to the Sacred Valley where you will be transferred to Cusco, and then to the airport.

    Meals included: Breakfast.

Information on our Covid-19 biosafety protocols and flexible policies

    Taking care of our own

To ensure the well-being and safety of our travelers and staff throughout our operational chain, Terra Explorer will comply with the health and safety measures and protocols established by the Peruvian Association of Adventure Tourism and Ecotourism (APTAE), and implement the Covid-19 health and safety guidelines for adventure tourism developed by the Adventure Travel Trade Association (ATTA).

Our experiences are designed considering the least possible exposure, where the final destinations are usually remote places. By their very nature, our adventure activities are considered to be low risk, mainly because they are performed outdoors where ventilation is constant and making it easy to achieve social distancing.

During these times we are working together with a small staff of honorable people who have been part of the Terra Explorer family for many years. They and their families are aligned with the established health and safety measures. Employing these staff members also seeks to reactivate the local economy.

We guarantee a safe, soul-fulfilling trip to all our travelers for whom we make these adventures possible.

    Our promise to you

Terra Explorer will strictly comply with the safety, cleaning, and hygiene protocols during our internal processes, third parties, and throughout your trip. This involves:

    • All staff involved in Terra Explorer operations are fully vaccinated and the guides are tested for Covid-19 one day prior to meeting clients.
    • Rigorous and constant disinfection of equipment, food and beverages, surfaces shared by travelers, places of activities, accommodation, and transportation.
    • Providing our clients with disinfection stations and resources for personal hygiene at all times of the trip.
    • Personnel trained to comply with the new measures: Use of protective equipment during work, good hygiene practice, social distancing, proper use of hygiene equipment for surfaces and clothing, self-assessment of health and how to respond to the possible event that oneself or someone close to them shows symptoms related to COVID-19.
    • Constant health monitoring of all personnel involved with Terra Explorer.
    • Guides trained to comply with the new security protocols, deliver the appropriate information to the traveler, monitor our travelers‘ health, and follow the established protocols in case a traveler shows symptoms or gets infected with COVID-19.
    • Established protocols and contingency plans if a traveler or staff shows symptoms or gets infected with COVID-19, including medical assistance if required.
    • Keeping you informed before and during your trip, with updates and official news of each visited destination.

    Your promise to us

Follow the instructions related to health and safety given by the Terra Explorer team and your guide, before and during your trip.

    • Good hygiene practice.
    • Compliance with the guidelines provided by local authorities in Peru, such as social distancing, use of masks where necessary, and hand washing.

    Stay home if:

    • Someone close to you or yourself shows symptoms related to COVID-19.
    • You have been exposed to or have tested positive for COVID-19.
    • You have been diagnosed with a severe medical condition that makes you vulnerable.

    Flexible bookings & cancellation policies

With the intention of delivering the most flexibility at the time of confirming your trip, we will determine the amount of the initial deposit individually and according to your itinerary characteristics.
